Teaching

Nutritional Science at the TUM:
The Else Kröner-Fresenius Centre (EKFZ) participates in the newly designed program of study of nutritional science for BSc and MSc degrees at the Centre of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan. Within three years of their bachelor studies our students receive a comprehensive introduction into the basics of nutritional medicine.

Each year 15-20 students of nutrition science as well as students of other life science disciplines are selected to participate in the biennial master program of study of nutritional science. In the course of their studies, we offer our students a specialized training in nutritional medicine which is concluded with a master thesis.

More information is available at Study Faculty of Nutritional Sciences.

In context with the Paediatric Nutritional Medicine at the Centre of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan a lecture (2 hours/week, 3 ECTS-Credits) and a seminar (2 hours/week, 2 ECTS-Credits) is offered within the master program.

The lecture “Paediatric Nutritional Medicine” mediates knowledge about the fundaments of nutrition during pregnancy and during babyhood and infancy. Topics are e.g. physiology of breastfeeding, contents of breast milk, taste programming, development of eating habits, formula diets and complementary food in the first year of life. Other issues of the lecture are paediatric metabolic diseases such as phenylketonuria, tyrosinaemia, galactosaemia and hereditary fructose intolerance. Additionally, the basics of food allergies and their clinical presentation will be discussed. Important foci are furthermore pathogenesis, diagnostics, clinical presentation and therapy of relevant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the pancreas and the liver during infancy and adolescence. Here we discuss disorders such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), lactose and fructose maldigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis and Wilson’s disease.

At the end of every lecture, the students are encouraged to evaluate teaching on a specific evaluation form.

In the seminar “Paediatric Nutritional Medicine”, which is offered concomitantly to the lectures, the contents of lectures will be further deepened. In presentations of 15 minutes by the students, special aspects of the preceding lecture will presented and critically discussed with the whole group. Also concomitantly to the topics of the lectures, we provide the possibility to taste different formulas such as partial or extensive hydrolysed baby formula, dietetic food for metabolic diseases such as phenylketonuria, elementary diets, oral rehydration solutions or gluten free products.

Medicine at the TUM:
Within the study course medicine at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, we provide lectures and seminars on topics of paediatric nutritional medicine.
